Day Two: Georgetown University & Cascading Mentorship

My Washington DC experience today was wonderful, I enjoyed going on a tour to Georgetown University and having dinner with our EOYDC Alumni. Something I enjoyed during this college tour was discovering the campus of Georgetown University, I really loved the architecture because it made me feel like I was in the fictional world of Harry Potter. I felt this way because the regular College campuses I know have a typical architecture, which is very repetitive unlike Georgetown university’s 1789 architecture.

Something I also enjoyed during our time with our EOYDC alumni was dinner. I enjoyed learning about life in college especially how it can be difficult coming from Oakland and living at Georgetown University which is a community where people do not share similarities with us people of color. This really stuck with me because I am a person of color coming from Oakland who is going to have similar challenges by having to assimilate to a new lifestyle I’m not used to.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed my second day of our Washington DC college tour because I gathered new information about college and the ways  I can prepare myself for my new life after high school.

My cascading mentorship experience is something I will never forget. It is awesome to have conversations with individuals you have never met before and have them be so honest about their experiences. I had a great conversation with Taylor who attends Georgetown University graduate school, she offered me great advice as well as insight on what it is like to live in Washington DC. While talking to Taylor I felt like I was talking to someone I had known for more than a year.

I am currently confused on what I would like to major in, as well as which school I really want to attend. I have found myself being upset that I’m so confused but from speaking with Taylor I know it’s okay to be. I appreciate my experience with having  a cascading mentor, and being someone’s cascading mentor.
