Days full of Service and Exploration.
For the first time ever, Southwest Airlines granted us international airline passes for a service mission trip. Four youth leaders were selected to make the 4 day journey. The first day was focused on the history of New Mexico. Students climbed the Pyramid of the Sun, saw thr Oyramid of thr Moon, learned about the Mayans and Aztecs. We also visited Mi Mexicolindo (My Beautiful Mexico) to learn about Agave and Obsidian. We ate at LaGruta which was a fascinating experience as the restuarant was located in a cave.
The next day we were picked up by our community partners at the YMCA. We drove to the Community School located at YMCA’s Naucalpan site. Students ages 3 years to 8. They welcomed us chanting “Estados Unidos? Estados Unidoa” and waving American flags! We toured the school, visited classrooms and then went to the playground to meet parents and volunteers. We broke into teams and then played games and engaged in activities before organizing to clean up the Kaboom playground area. Everyone felt a sense of accomplishment looking at the leaf free play area. We all enjoyed a lunch celebration complete with Horchata!Afterwards, the youth leaders presented gifts – tennis shoes donated from NIKE and Fanny packs for the teachers from EOYDC. Having felt a sense of accomplishment and pride all the youth leaders gave out bags of Southwest pretzels before they left. There was a hug fest of smiles as they said goodbye.Special Thanks to Abraham for coordinating an amazing visit.
