Fisk University

Although, I haven’t been here long, I feel so grateful to be in Atlanta. I am grateful to Southwest for helping me get here, and I am grateful to my black ancestors that broke their backs to create this southern ambiance. This is only the beginning to an amazing journey. Fisk University, founded in 1866, is located in Nashville,Tennessee. Fisk was the first accredited HBCU. On the 3 1/2 hour road trip from Atlanta to Tennessee we viewed the beautiful scenery, talked about the history of Fisk, and the HBCU experience.

Domine Ezechukwu is a senior at Fisk University, majoring in Physiology/Pre-Med . She graduates with honors on Monday, May 1st, and will receive her BS. After graduation Domine will be in Germany with the famous Jubilee singers for part of the summer. Domine greeted us, and she started off by taking us to the President’s old home, which is now where her LEAD program takes place. LEAD helps low income and  first generation students navigate college. Domine is a mentor of LEAD and helps freshman with their first year and guides them through the experience. With the help of LEAD Domine says she did not have to pay for books since her freshman year.

We then went to the Aaron Douglas Art Gallery. While we were there we had the opportunity to see Mariah Gardner, an EOYDC alumni, and graduating senior majoring in Art. Mariah has plans to bring her talents back to EOYDC in the future, and to have a career in art therapy. We headed to the Special Collections museum where we saw Abraham Lincoln’s bible. We also saw the weapons they used to beat slaves. Fun fact! In one of Domine’s chemistry labs, she was able to see parts of the Underground Railroad.

Mariah shared inspirational advice to us, like working on procrastination now so that when we enter college our skills will already be at a college levelMariah also informed us that we will need to take risk while in college. The risk she took was choosing Art as her major. Overall, the experience of being on a historical campus with young black students was amazing.
